ABOUT

Alexandra Browne

From architecture to hand-painted ceramics

Alexandra began her career as an architect before pivoting to interiors, working as an interior designer for Rose Uniacke. It was here that the seed of her future direction in homeware design was sown. Working on a project for a client’s holiday home in Cap Ferrat, she couldn’t find the perfect tiles for his bathroom. So she decided to create her own.

Thus the Pampelonne Tile was born: hand-painted ceramic tiles fired in a kiln in her basement.

Inspired by the bygone elegance of the French Riviera, Alexandra’s Pampelonne tiles are both understated yet oozing style and a touch of playfulness.  On each tile, a sleek figure sits, stretches or snoozes, evoking warm beaches and lazy days. This painted population is pretty and perky in stylised curves.

New styles and handmade homewares

More tile designs followed, installed in homes from Maui to Megeve, each tile meticulously painted by hand.

Since those early days, Alexandra has broadened her range to include lamps, fabrics, handbags, cushions and napkins.

She continues to hand-paint her tiles and ceramic lamp bases while developing a close relationship with Ricamour Embroideries in Mumbai for her fabric items.

Preserving craft traditions

Ricamour shares her obsession with craftsmanship and preserving the ancient art of hand embroidery. Set up by two textile graduates from the London College of Fashion, Ricamour has worked with couture houses, including Alexander McQueen, Matthew Williamson and Jonathan Saunders. Each bead, sequin and stitch of Alexandra's designs stands for a refined skill that allows communities and livelihoods to flourish.
